YKTA was established after the Yom Kippur War as a product of the accelerated development of the Air Force.
In 1997, two units were merged: YKTA 8832 (the Civil Industries Liaison Unit) and VK, into a single unit called YKTA, which brings together all of the Air Force’s activities vis-à-vis the industries. Before the merger, YKTA dealt with liaison with civilian factories in Israel and abroad, and VK dealt only with liaison with the Aerospace Industries. In 2014, with the merger of YKTA and the Supply and Transportation Center Unit (in the initials MAS), YKAL was established.
In 2024, responsibility for all air logistics (AL) units at the IDF bases was transferred from the maintenance squadrons to the unit.
