A beautiful chapter in Israeli-Dutch relations is being commemorated: During the Gulf War, when Israel was attacked by Iraqi Scud missiles, a Patriot missile battery from the Netherlands was stationed on Mount Eitan, west of Jerusalem, to protect both the city and the center of the country. 81 Dutch personnel arrived in Israel at that time in an operation called “Patriot Diamond” and its commander was Lieutenant Colonel Van der Weer.
Earlier this week, Ambassador Hans Docter participated in the unveiling ceremony of the commemorative plaque for the operation on Mount Eitan, in the presence of current and former IDF officers, some of whom still fondly remember the Dutch soldiers who came to stay.

Tijdens de Golfoorlog, terwijl Israel door Irakese Scud-raketten wordt aangevallen, komt een Patriot-batterij uit Nederland en plaatst zich op de Etan-berg ten westen van Jeruzalem, voor bescherming van de stad en het centrum van Israel. De 81 Nederlandse militairen maken deel uit van operatie Diamond Patriot in 1991 onder bevel van Lieutenant Colonel H.J. Vanderweijer .
Op zondag nam Ambassadeur Hans Docter deel aan de onthulling van het monument op de Etan-berg, tezamen met toenmalige en huidige IDF-vertegenwoordigers. Sommigen herinneren zich nog met warmte de Nederlandse soldaten die bij hen te gast waren.
