Dog Training Center

The center was absorbed into the 314th IDF Air Force in 1984 for the purpose of training dogs for protection. Despite being subordinate to the 314th IDF Air Force, the physical location of the dog training center was not in the IDF Air Force but at the Hatzor Air Base.

The center was divided into four teams: the first was the detection team, which formed the nucleus of the center and within its framework, soldiers from both the Air Force and the IDF Air Force trained to work with the detection dogs. During the training, which lasted 18 weeks, they learned to get to know the dogs, work with them, and operate events with them. At the end of it, they were certified as detection dogs and sent to protect the various IDF bases. Two additional teams were the Explosives Detection Team, which trained soldiers to operate dogs that specialize in detecting explosives and were sent to protect large events, mass ceremonies, and detection missions, and the R&D Team (Research and Development), which was responsible for all aspects of research at the center.

The center also had a puppy team whose goal was to train, tame, and nurture the dogs from the time they were puppies, as they were responsible for the care of the puppies and mothers, for the initial training of the dogs, and for training them in various abilities.

The center worked in cooperation with the IDF and sent a professor on its behalf who, in cooperation with the center’s soldiers, worked on studying the dogs’ behavior and imparting new abilities.

As part of the research work, the center succeeded in developing abilities such as probing, detecting explosives, and protecting assets – a new development that took its place in the service of the corps.[7]

The kennel center closed in October 2022.
