יקת"א הוקמה לאחר מלחמת יום הכיפורים כתוצר של ההתפתחות המואצת של חיל האוויר.
בשנת 1997 אוחדו שתי יחידות: יקת"א 8832 (יחידת הקישור לתעשיות אזרחיות) וי.ק., ליחידה אחת בשם יקת"א, המאגדת את כלל פעילויות חיל האוויר אל מול התעשיות. לפני האיחוד עסקה יקת"א בקישור למפעלים אזרחיים בישראל ומחוצה לה וי.ק. עסקה בתחום הקישור אל מול התעשייה האווירית בלבד. בשנת 2014, עם איחוד יקת"א ויחידת מרכז אספקה ושינוע (בראשי תיבות מא"ש), הוקמה יחק"ל.
בשנת 2024 הועברה האחריות על כל גפי לוגיסטיקה אווירית (גל״א) בבסיסי החיל מטייסות התחזוקה ליחידה
